Force Entra Connect Sync
Overview
Entra Connect syncs on-prem AD to Entra ID every 30 minutes by default. Force a sync when you need changes to apply immediately.
Run on BCMDC001
Open PowerShell as Administrator.
Delta Sync (Changes Only)
Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Delta
Use for: User deletions, attribute changes, new users
Full Sync (Everything)
Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Initial
Use for: Major changes, troubleshooting sync issues
Warning: Full sync takes longer and uses more resources.
Check Sync Status
Get-ADSyncScheduler
Shows next scheduled sync and current status.
View Sync Errors
Open Synchronization Service Manager on BCMDC001:
- Start menu → Search "Synchronization Service"
- Click Operations tab
- Look for errors in recent runs
Metaverse Search (Advanced)
To see how Entra Connect views a specific user:
- Open Synchronization Service Manager
- Click Metaverse Search tab
- Add clause:
displayNamecontainsUsername - Click Search
Shows linked connectors and sync status.
Common Issues
Sync not running:
Set-ADSyncScheduler -SyncCycleEnabled $true
User not syncing:
- Check user is in a synced OU
- Check Entra Connect OU filtering settings
- Look for sync errors in Service Manager
